Canberra B.Mk.2 WH864

I was stationed at RAF North Weald in the RAF Police and was called out to protect the crash site with others.

There was a huge crater that had two what appeared to be furrows radiating from the crater that was caused by the impact due to the earth being displaced.

My picture appeared in either the Daily Express or Mail standing at the bottom of the crater. I contacted the papers to try and get a copy of the photo but they never responded.

Maybe Digging for Britain will make an episode!!

Cheers

Ok chaps here you go. A photo of the clipping from the Herts and Essex Observer newspaper showing the crater in which I presume the OP is standing!

During my time at the Bassingbourn Control Tower Museum I tasked myself with researching as many of the resident 231 OCU Canberra crashes as I could. Somewhere I have a photo copy of the newspaper report from the day after the crash of B.2 WH864, and If my memory serves me correctly there is a small photo of the crater as well.

If you don’t mind waiting I’ll see if I can dig it out over the Christmas break?

Goggled this to find a date and place and came up with, as expected, a link to aviation-Safety.net:

https://aviation-safety.net/wikibase/21043

but also to a prior thread on this forum:

Doesn’t help find the photo in question, but fairly impressed with the way Google can substitute for the absence of a site ‘search’ facility.
