Stuart. They did ask him for his recollections and they are in the report. Their conclusion is that he more likely entered a spin than a spiral dive.

“It is likely that the pilot started to recover but tried to pitch up before the aircraft had built sufficient airspeed leading to a secondary spin.”

Many have come unstuck having stopping the rotation of a spin and then started recovery from the dive too early.

Well I did say that I didn’t fully understand……. so why didn’t the AAIB (not the CAA) ask the pilot?

The report is the work of the AAIB. Nothing to do with the CAA.

Not fully understanding the way that the CAA work, I am surprised that they didn’t ask the pilot why the aeroplane did what it did, as he was obviously in the best position ; in any event I’m glad his injuries were as light as they were (considering the angle of descent).

As thorough as we have come to expect. It sound as though Mr B was unlucky enough to run into a big heap of imponderables, but had a guardian angel doing overtime, and is a very lucky chap to have got out of that in any shape even vaguely resembling OK (I have his seen his name linked to a project in Flypast, so I assume that he has now made a full recovery, I certainly hope so).

AIIB report here.

A very comprehensive examination indeed.

Sorry to hear about this but happy to hear that the pilot is OK.

Maybe the title could be amended to show the correct date.

Well wishes to Mr B. There is a photo going round of the aircraft moments before the accident that when I first saw honestly thought you wouldn’t walk away from.

My goodness I’m glad to hear you’re safe and well Mr B after that incident.

Best wishes to yourself  and your Biplane and a speedy recovery.

The news report is almost unreadable (see below), but it looks as though Matthew Boddington (AKA The Blue Max in a previous incarnation of this site) had a very lucky escape. Hope you’re OK, BM, and I hope the Biggles Biplane rises again (after all, it is Tiger Moth based, and they seem infinitely resurrectable)
