The Phoney War has been going on for months now and as we come to 1940 we have The Battle of France , Dunkirk and the big one, The Battle of Britain.
The Battle of France I think we lost around 1400 airmen, (happy to have the number corrected by more intelligent beings)
So hopefully this thread can be used to heads up and remember 1940.

As we still can’t edit posts (it seems) I add a reference to the photos above:

Another view of the event shown above. Note the school uniforms. I still have my father’s blazer and it fits me!

I have a diary written by a friend of the family covering 1940, will post a few entries, not in any particular order showing how life carried on.
21 August 1940 Wednesday. “Bomb dropped in Myrtle Road lunch time, went to see damage in evening, met Miss Adams, fetched knitted skirt. 13 planes brought down.”
24 August 1940 Saturday. “52 planes down in big battle overhead. Sunday school treat in field, had to get all children in the ditch for one hour and a quarter.”
26 August 1940 Monday. “Raid in afternoon at Warley, Mrs Sawards gardener killed, Met Edith and Nancy in evening, long chat. 6 hour warning, went to shelter.”

Good idea Colin. My father served in the RAF from 1940 to 1945, but was one of the lucky ones and lived well into his nineties. I hope your new thread will provide a basis for reviving memories of 1940, as well as reviving this Forum.
