The fire chief on BBC Look East was concerned that there may have been asbestos in the warehouse construction and that it had got in to the smoke plume. That is bad news for anyone who breathes it in so some concern over pollution is called for.

The fire was in a warehouse ON the Aerodrome. Thanks to some quick work by on site firefighters and the Sywell gang clubbing together to move airframes none were apparently lost. The blaze was very close to Sloane Helicopters. Emergency services on site. Could have been a lot worse and fortunately no casualties. TT

From posts by local police on Facebook, the fire appeared to be caused by a gas explosion in a business park warehouse adjacent to the aerodrome. The hangars and field itself are untouched.
Thankfully nobody was hurt.
(and EN224 is safe 😉 )

The BBC media reference to witness Karen Matthews was formulated by someone who chose to focus upon one statement the woman made, or may have made. It’s the bleedin’ media, after all. We don’t know what Karen’s actual words were, so to scoff at one reference to pollution attributed to her is a bit much. She may have also said,
“Thank God nobody was hurt! Still, this fire will devastate some people’s lives, and that is a dreadful, horrid tragedy, in and of itself. I feel for everyone who will be impacted. By the way, I do have minor concerns for the ramifications of pollution, given that such fires do tend to release a few toxic materials into the environment. I feel that my unease regarding pollution, which will not keep me awake at night, should not be scoffed at by anyone on a Key Publishing web forum.”:)

Forget the people that could be hurt or the priceless artefacts that could be burnt – think of the pollution! :applause:
Irrespective of our priorities, and with the collapse of global ecosystems foremost in the news, the effects of pollution and related environmental issues make our hobby seem very, very trivial. We need to put things in perspective.

Fortunately no reported casualties – aircraft seemed to have been moved out of harms way – fire was in warehousing adjacent to Sloane Helicopters. Emergency services on scene and dealing. Glad all are ok. TT

Witness Karen Matthews described the scene as “devastation” and said she was concerned with the pollution the fire would cause.

Whatever it is, no injuries is the most important worry.
Just have to hope it is actually a warehouse, not a hangar, though whichever it is, it will be pretty bad news for some people , sadly.
