Supermunk

Is there anybody out there who can give me some detailed information or point me in the right direction to find same in respect of the Supermunk. By this I mean the dozen or so Chipmunks that were re-engined with the 180hp Lycoming for glider tugging by the RAFGSA clubs around the country. The project was undertaken by the late Dick Stratton of the BGA but details are hard to come by, although I understand it was listed in a copy of Jane’s All the World Aircraft at some point.

Any help much appreciated.

I recall that at some time at RAFGSA Bicester there was a very rare Chipmunk look a like , a Hindustan HT2 as part of Dick Strattons quest for tugs. Did that happen or is it just my cobwebby grey cells getting it wrong. And if it did happen where did it go?

Many thanks Chaps for your contributions and for putting me right on the donor aircraft being the Beagle Airedale. The project was mentioned in 3rd April 1975 edition of “Flight” and it was also listed in Jane’s All the World Aircraft but not sure of the year! 1976 perhaps??

The mount used is made for the Chipmunk – Beagle Airedales were used as engine donors because it was a cheap way of acquiring Lycoming 180’s.

Ex Brat – many thanks for that most interesting. You are quite correct the mod was based on an “off the shelf” engine mount namely the Beagle Terrier the stress tests were only carried out for its tugging role and no further testing was done in terms of aerobatics.

As I said its pretty difficult finding any further info but thanks for your info
