The Finnish Gauntlet has not yet been to the UK. The engine unit and prop are ex Pembroke of which the Finns had a small number. A Saab B.17 has appeared at Legends.

I don’t think it has ever been at Leg ends,unless somebody knows otherwise !

Did it come top Flying Legends once, or am I mixing it up with the SAAB -B-17 ?

One day I’d love to see this wonderful aircraft make an appearance at Old Warden…one can dream!
(and yes, I’d love to see the Leonides swapped for a Mercury, but then there probably aren’t too many of the latter in Finland!)

About the wheels…
Don’t be too critical of them. Ten years ago a friend was restoring a very rare prewar civil type and of course it needed wheels.
He found a source to make new ones, but the tooling cost was enormous (something like $40,000, IIRC).
Luckily the size would fit other antiques and he found enough interested parties to split the tooling cost so it was feasible…but still surprisingly expensive.

We tend to expect the big expenses during a restoration, but smaller items…or those that one doesn’t automatically think of…are also costly.

I’m happy enough guys, it was featured in Aeroplane a few years back. Just a pity it doesn’t look authentic. No different to an Allison powered Yak or a FW190D I suppose. Those wheels though….

Agreed. Until that article was originally published I had no idea there was an intact example let alone one that flew. Amazing. There are some videos on YouTube which allow those of us who are geographically-disadvantaged to see and hear it display.

KurtB to paraphrase Spencer Flack, when you own and operate the only extant example of an aircraft you can fit it with whichever engine/prop/spinner/undercarriage etc. you like! :eagerness:

Quite lovely but it would have been perfect if the pilot wore a leather helmet and goggles.
