This was doing the rounds on Facebook this morning.New recovery about same time as the Il2 recovery I believe.
In one of the lakes of the Murmansk region, we together with “ICAR” team found a German fighter Bf-109G2. Parts of the aircraft was conserved and delivered to the Technic Museum of Vadim Zadorozhniy for exposure. Upon completion of the researches we will make a decision on the restoration of the aircraft.
This fighter until 1942 fought near Leningrad, and then relocated to the Luostari airfield in Murmansk redion. From there, he support the attacks of bombers on the ships of the Northern sea convoys of the allies and defended the German airfields from the attacks of the Soviet bomber and assault aircraft. In the winter of 1944 the plane was hit, landed on the ice of the lake, where it was dumped.
The glass of the cockpit canopy on the right side is punched. The folding part of the cockpit lantern, instrument panel, sight, as well as weapons on the plane are absent (dismantled by the enemy forces during the war). On the left and right side of the fuselage, as well as on the horizontal and vertical tail are riveted metal “patches”, covering the holes from the shells, which indicates the repair of the aircraft in the factory. The fuselage on the right and left sides has numerous damages, mainly in the form of holes from bullets and shells. The lower fuselage panels are dented. On the left flap there is a hole from the projectile, with a diameter of about 100 mm, as well as multiple bullet holes with a diameter of 20 to 50 mm.the Tip of the left plane has a dent across the surface, the right Aileron as a result of hitting the projectile is broken into 2 parts. Due to the vertical position of the aircraft at the bottom of the lake, the front part of the fuselage and wings, located in the mud, preserved much better than the other parts.

Yes, Dunlop rubber products were produced in Germany during WWII. The same with licensed production of other items, such as Eclipse starters etc. I do not know if any payments went back to the parent companies but, I expect that all payments ceased after declaration of war.

Just hope they don’t destroy all the original bits to recreate a flyer.

Bob T – that Hamden was recovered the week after it was shot down to recover the RAF gunner that was killed

Another very interesting recovery. Did they lose the Propeller? I suspect it fell out of the engine as the magnesium castings have dissolved.

Hi All,
DH2EH – Don’t thank me I just thought as the OP hadn’t the time that I had, I thought I would just try to be helpful to the OP and all the pictures are all courtesy of :- http://www.facebook.com/wingsofvicto…53906318060525 :eagerness:
But every time news of these recoveries get aired it just makes me wonder what else is at the bottom of lakes across Europe, especially what was the eastern front it’s not unimaginable there may be some extinct types just waiting to be discovered that have been quietly lying hidden in plain site ?
The problem I see is whether or not whoever wants to invest time and money into any of these projects far easier ways to waste cash than actually retrieving old aircraft wrecks as some would see them sadly…..

Another amazing find.
Thanks for posting the pics here Geoff.
Interesting to see the 109 sported Dunlop tires. What’s up with that?
By: sopwith.7f1 - 4th October 2018 at 09:57
Seeing the condition of this recent find, makes me wonder if they’ll find the Hampden that was accidentally shot down by Soviet fighter’s, and ditched into a lake, and if they do find it, will it be in the same kind of condition.

M-109 G2 Wk Nr 14232

NJ, well if they referred to it being dismantled by ‘friendly forces’ that would be incorrect. It is fact – not hatred.

Ken, different aircraft, the one you saw has moved to another museum to make way for this example.

I don’t know if this is old news – but I visited the Zadorozhni museum in 2007 and they had this Me-109G awaiting restoration….

It was on display in 2008…..

Is this Facebook report a different, new, discovery?

Interesting to note that the Russian language extended caption uses the term ‘enemy forces’. Still a lot of hatred out there I think.
