Hi Guys,
Not been on for a while, so I hope everyone is well.
Found a large alloy/aluminium washed up on the beach at Selsey recently. It’s obviously been in the sea for quite a while, as it’s bent, bashed around and gouged. What caught my eye was the colours of it ,as it had been painted and obviously in the sea for some time. I think some one else might have moved it up the shoreline, as it was way above the high tide mark.
It is bent over but I measured it as best I could, and make it 29″ wide by approximately 41″ tall. The width is about 2mm. Apologies for the metric and imperial measures.
The colours, are on one side are faded greenish, with a burnt section that has altered the colour of it around the edges of the burnt area. The reverse side is a faded matt green if that makes sense. The burn marks have obviously been there a while as the dents and deep gouges in the alloy were made after it was burnt.
There are some holes around the panel, which must have taken fixings, but I can’t see any rivet holes as such.
I forwarded the details to the Tangmere museum, but of course it’s impossible really to say where it came from.
Just thought I would put it on here in case it’s of interest.
Best Regards

Take the panel out of your front door…walk until you encounter a road sign and compare thickness.
Take along a magnet and determine whether the road sign is steel.
That will answer a couple of questions.

Best alert TIGHAR – might be part of Glenn Miller’s airplane.

It’s too thick for a caravan skin.

Looks like a piece of caravan.

Hi Mike,
That could be a possibility. The burns marks were made before the dents and gouges though as they scratch through the alloy. I guess I will never know, but just couldn’t leave it on the beach, as it did grab my interest.

It would be very unusual to have such a large panel without any rivet holes, stiffeners or structure present.
Could it be an old aluminium road sign? The burnt bit could have been where someone used it to cook something on whilst camping on the beach.
