I would be interested to hear if the build quality of Australian built Tiger Moths and their Gipsy major engines are any different to the British built counterparts. The same ,better or whatever? Thanks for your replies in advance.

Andy. Cracked pedestals? I presume that you are refering to the heads. Answer- ,No. Throw them out and replace.

No, These were both standard GM 1″s and both long term Tiger Moth installations. Both were cracked from the front right hand gravity oil drain apature and when found were 5 to 6 ins long. I have had a 10-2 crack alog the top joint flange , about 2 ins., and this one was weld repaired but after 300 hours odd of operation had warped the whole case 16 thou sideways.

Hi Stan.
Would you have the drawings for repairing the cracked pedestals and the replacement studs?
Thanks in advance

In my experience the Aussie Gipsy Major crankcase is a better beast. The English ones are prone to cracking( I am just ministering to two english cases which are both cracked from the same place and found another two of my stock of PWS english cases also cracked) whereas I have never found a cracked Aussie one . I am lead to believe that a different spec alumimium was used for the G.M. Holden production . Ref the airframe stuff I have found no particular differences in build quality or of matching parts of one origin to one of the alternate. My current new Tiger has Aussie sides which match up and fit English crossmember components without any “fettleing” required.
