Hi all, I (well WE552)needs your help
I have the Installation and Maintenance Instructions for Engine Speed Indicators and Accessories. Fig 4 shows a Right-angle gearbox that can be fitted to the rear of these instruments.
To enable the correct original Tacho to go in my Auster T.7 its clear there must have been one of these gearboxes fitted. There cant be any less than a 9in radius to the flex drive. So if it didn’t have one, the drive would be hanging very low under the panel and potentially fouling other controls by the time it coils its way forward to the firewall.
I cant find a part number and Google throws up automotive RPM gearboxes.
I have a Mark IXB 600-2600 one for Gipsy Major fitted Austers and Tigers. I have seen people mount them 90deg off which would make the cable vanish into the panel cavity sideways. But I think it will look stupid on the panel front.
Can anyone help me? At least with a part number???
I would be very much appreciative
Cheers
Anthony

I didn’t realise there was so much information available!
I am certainly in the market for one (after you, of course, AG) if there are any for sale.
Note that there is a weak link in the drive which ought not be omitted. You can see it well illustrated in the first of the pictures Dave has posted.

Hi Dave, would you be interested in selling it? Is it like ‘Old Stagers’ one ? Condition? Sorry so many questions…
I might have some Auster parts you might need to swap??

Hi Guys
First up, thank you all for your help, I really appreciate your taking the time for me!
Now, I just got to find one? At least I know what I am looking for more definitively now. Any ideas who might have them?
Dave do you??
Thanks again for your help so far!
Cheers

Hi Juraj,
The info is taken from an early 1950s Smiths Aviation Instruments and Equipment catalogue and covers most flight & engine instruments and equipment of the period and includes info on Desynn system along with installation details for most of the instruments/equipment. There are a few missing pages but it’s mostly complete, and also contains a price list for instance the gearboxes above were priced at £1 15s each!
Regards
Dave

radarsdesk, what is the manual the pictures are made of?
Which instruments it covers?
Looks interesting.
Thanks.

Tacho gearboxes
Hopefully the info on these Smiths data sheets will be clear enough to read.
If not I can scan them and e-mail if required.
Smiths p/n for right angled gearbox is 10GB for non-reversing type and 12GB for reversing type
Hope that helps
Dave

They look like this, AG. But I cannot see any part number on it, perhaps because of the coat of crackle paint. I could do with a new one myself, since the helical gear is completely worn out. Any offers?
