A 96 year old gentleman sat in the cockpit seat of our Spitfire in Windsor last month. He was amazingly preserved. he flew Spits with the RAF in Malta.
How do I find out his service record? Anyone got a link?
Thanks,
Dave

Unless the rules have changed, the RAF will be glad to take anyone’s 30 pounds. If the request comes from someone other than the veteran himself or next-of-kin (as stated on a form that must be submitted), then the few pages released will be highly redacted.
I gambled once, ordering the file of an officer, F/Lt Edward Stanley, and I received a total of four pages, very heavily blacked out in key places, such as seen here in a scan of page one.
But your veteran’s purchase won’t have material redacted. It’s just that even for this ex-RAF gentleman — and you said he was RAF (not RCAF, where, if he was, his personnel file, maybe 200 or more pages thick, would be available for viewing/copying) — there won’t be very much bang for his buck. But there will be info that will be valuable to him.

If he was RAF (ie not RCAF) and if he was a commissioned Officer – if you type his name into google thus… Joe Bloggs RAF Gazette you might get his commissioning date /promotion dates from the London Gazette.
If that does not work you could try a direct search into the London Gazette website (I never find the LG website very user friendly and it seems a bit ‘hit and miss’).
If not I think only his family can request details about his service record from MOD

Dave,
I think he will be charged 30 pounds to get four to six pages of scribble, not much at all, from the RAF, and it might take months. I can provide an address, if interested.
Cheers,
Matt
