Very sad news, never got to meet him sadly, but together with Tom Neil what a wonderful, modest representative of the Few. Just dug out First Light to read again, in his honour. One of the finest memoirs on war flying that I know.
Blue skies sir!

R.I.P. Geoffrey Wellum. I am sure that he is now having a few drinks with Brian Kingcombe , Bob Tuck, Tony Bartley and the rest of 92. God speed sir. You will never be forgotten.

The most unwanted news, first Tom now Geoffrey, although I don’t like the phrase, the few are getting fewer, but it is true…
probably having a pint sitting on a deck chair at dispersal with the rest of them, bless them, blue skies…
regards,
jack…

RIP Mr Wellum.

Very sad news indeed. I was fortunate to have lunch with him in 2003 and he signed my copy of First Light. Only 3 weeks ago a friend had a few pints with him, so he was enjoying life right to the end.
I really hope the BBMF or someone else provides a Spitfire for a flypast at his funeral – if it is held in Mullion, CU is but a stones through away.
RIP Sqn Ldr G. H. A. Wellum

Only last night I was (misquoting, as it turns out) quoting First Light in the condolences book to an ex-pilot. I read it for the first time in Ottakars in Banbury while waiting for my car to be serviced and MOTed (I read fast!), and walked out of the shop with a copy. I’d almost dropped it when I realised he’d flown from Great Sampford. My late father would have seen him flying in and out. I tracked down his address, wrote him a letter, and received a very nice reply. Like so many of you, I’d always hoped to meet him and thank him in person. It’s in front of me now, and this time I will get the quote right.
“Hold on little clouds, I’ll be up there in a minute”

Utterly gutted! I didn’t have the chance to meet Geoffrey but having read and watched First Light on numerous occasions he became a bloke I had true admiration for! Such a brilliant man!
Such an engaging character when ever you see him on telly!
Blue Skies Geoffrey!
Reunited with his mate Peter at last!
Rest In Peace

Thank you sir, and all your chums for our freedom.

We will remember them’.
