I’m busy assembling photographs from the late 1920s – early 1930s for a book, and several show an eagle-eyed Aeronautical Inspection Directorate inspector lurking in the background. This got me wondering what kind of reports these guys wrote and whether they are likely to be hidden away at Kew. Were they simple tick-in-the-box style reports to confirm that all was well or were they more narrative in style?

They still exist (in a much diminished form) as defence Quality assurance – Field Force DQA-FF

HQ bods were expected to write appraisals of firms’ set up – today, compliance with best practice. The eagle-eyed Resident Inspectors stamped (literally) product. If they found it necessary to reject at a rate above par they would call in HQ. Anything at Kew would be in MAP/MoS files referenced to AID/EID.
