Yet Another 'What Aircraft Is This?' Thread

A mate of mine found this pic amongst his grandfather’s things- nothing is known about it at all, though the grandfather served in Africa at one point. Looks like a 109 to me, except for the canopy..? But can anyone shed any light please..?

Ok, got another picture from my mate-

-which has the number ‘544’ visible on the tail. A quick Google of bf109 544 turned up this image, taken at Gardermoen in 1945-

So what do we know about this. Captured/abandoned base at the end of the war, maybe?

Interesting how it’s opened so evenly, that you’d think it was designed to do so. A view of the way the hinge on the right side of the cockpit looks would be very enlightening. (One can only live in hope that such a photo exists.)

I agree it’s a 109G. The canopy hinges to the starboard side so that one is obviously damaged and has been jammed in that vertical position.

Deffo a Bf109, looks like a G model to me and the lumpy fairings over the cowl guns and the canopy style suggest G-6. The main canopy and rear section would detach if the jettison handle was pulled, looks like someone might have pulled it unwittingly on this example.

The negative has been reversed- the filler cap (with yellow octane rating triangle) and the supercharger intake are on the wrong side. Edit : Duggy beat me to it.

Definitely a Bf109. Looks like the canopy’s busted and has been stuck in that position – the guy sitting in the cockpit must have found that a pretty tight squeeze!
