Lancasters crashed in Franconia in WW2 – Part 1

Ladies and Gentlemen,
I am a new member of this forum and will give you some informations to my person. I am a retired engineer and 65 years old. I started two years ago to investigate airplane crashes in the neighbourhood of Schweinfurt, the German ball bearing city, that was bombed 23 times in WW2.
My hometown is Haßfurt, 25 km east of Schweinfurt. Up to now I could find crashplaces of 3 Boeing B17, 6 Lancasters, one Stirling and one ME110G4. I am searching with a metal detector and found lots of parts, that I would like you to help you for their identification.
Thanks for any reply

Toni, glad to have been able to help. As you will have seen from your other threads, there are plenty of other forum members able to comment. My knowledge is restricted to the Lancaster!

Hi BobKat,
Thank you very much for your identification. I’m just some days in this forum and I’m very excited about the resonance and expert knowledge of some members. And you belong definitely to these experts. I’m heading for further identification projects with you all.
Greetings Toni

I think your part may well be the bomb carrier electro-magnetic release unit. The diagram below shows a connecting lever to the release hook and a circular hole at the corner of the unit for the pivot (where arrowed in red). Your piece seems to be the same, but the end has fragmented.

Additional pictures

Thanks for all replys.
Enclosed pictures of the bomb assumed gear part. It really seems to be an electric powered locking part. I have to clean it.

I think your third item could be part of the landing gear locking mechanism. See the horizontal bar at the bottom of the attached picture.

This diagram shows the Electro-magnetic release unit for the Avro Bomb Carrier Mk.I. Unfortunately it is largely concealed in the picture, but is it the right shape for your piece? Can you provide a picture of the entire piece, please?

Sondler 64,

As Maple 01 says, Air Ministry Code 11A relates to Bomb Gear. I have checked in my Lancaster parts list, but 11A/466 does not appear. This is not surprising because, if this is part of the Bomb Carrier, as seems likely, it would not appear in the Parts List as it is a separate item of equipment. If I can find an illustration which shows your piece, I will post it.

According to an old post (which I’ve linked to below) 11A = Aircraft Bomb Gear

Hope this helps

Hello Sondler 64, welcome to the Forum.

I’m a bit saddened by the lack of responses to your post but I am sure they will be forthcoming. There are a lot of very knowledgeable people on here.

Your wrecks are, no-doubt, the victims of flak and night-fighters during the bombing campaign over Germany. There will be very many sad stories attached to those parts but, unfortunately, we will probably never know what they are. Most of the aircraft, if not all, will have gone in hard so will be well fragmented.

Good luck with your research and stay with this Forum – it’s likely to be one of, if not the, best source of information. Sorry I can’t help much with what you have at the moment.

Anon.
