Noticed something just aft of the exhausts of the first aircraft in the picture below – is it an anti glare shield? Was this an official mod? Not seen a Spitfire fitted with them before, but seen something similar on Hurricanes?

The glare shields were quite narrow and fitted roughly in line with the canopy rails to the forward fuel tank cover.

Yes, they are taking hot air out to the guns. However some Spitfires did have glare shields as on Hurricanes, but as they were less used for night fighting you won’t see them as often.

Think I may have answered my own question – they look like gun heat intensifier tubes?
