Lysander and Swordfish for sale on Platinum Fighters.

Yep, my two favorite planes, and I can’t afford either!

Don’t laugh too much…It may be the future of warbirds in say, 30 years, when the production of AVGAS (and indeed gasoline) comes to an end once gas powered autos are banned.

I think that one’s based about 30min from me!

Are you sure? More of an accident waiting to happen I’d say. A PT-6 probably provides more torque and a quicker response, which means that you need to be even quicker on the rudder and elevator trim. Not a good idea on a Lizzie if you ask me! Oh well, good thing it’s only hypothetical…

In my defence, in my apprenticeship I never got to touch the engines (complex bits of kit those PT-6s!) so my thoughts are based on what looks cool as a scale model!

Less torque initially at throttle-up since the spool-up time in a turbine is slower than a piston-engine. Not much different at cruise or landing. Cleaner windshield though!

Works well here:

Whack a PT-6 on the front of the Lizzie and you’d have a great bushplane!

If the Stringbag picture was genuine, I could imagine its fuselage trying to tie itself up in knots, trying to cope with the torque from the engine and propeller.

In the “April Fools” thread on their website, there is a long draw out description of some of the problems they have had with the engine even though it was overhauled in the UK. Don’t know which company did the job though.

In a world of multi million pound/dollar WWII fighters, the prices aren’t unreasonable for unique and potentially flyable aircraft.

This will be a chance to see if the UK warbird community can look past fighters and support other parts of UK aviation history.

I surmise that these sales are Engine driven. What are the problems associated with maintaining Bristol poppet valve radials : lack of spare parts, certain parts that wear rapidly or a lack of North American engineering patience with engines that, in comparison to US radial engines of the same era, are spectacularly unsupported ?
It seems a shame that a well resourced institution, with a flying airframe philosophy, is letting go of unique aircraft that a realist would probably say will only go into static display moving forward.

Yeah, but even that new engine is impossible to get cylinders for ;P……
