I’ve recently been sent this image which the sender claims is a genuine Luftwaffe photo of bombers over Bognor Regis in 1940. Personally I have my doubts, especially given the Mediterranean style camouflage scheme. Over to you guys…….

A famous photograph. The Heinkels flew on without dropping their bombs on the town. On seeking instructions whether they should do so, famously the reply was ‘B****r Bognor’!

If it’s 1940 then the aircraft camouflage makes it a fake. That appears to be early Luftwaffe North African desert scheme which was applied roughly in field and was simply an over paint of the existing RLM 70/71 with usually Italian sand coloured camo. In 1940 the Germans were not in Nth Africa. Other things like the rather poor cropping of aircraft images suggest fake as well.

A bit removed for fear of invasion?
Or edited out?

I’m trying to work out what’s going on with the gap in the pier, but can’t find any evidence that this ever happened

I take it that it a copy of an original aerial photo (dateable) but someone thought it was a good idea to sex-it-up with fake Heinkels? Greed eh!

I hope you didn’t pay for the image – it was doing the rounds on Facebook around last August and was very much decided to be a fake then.
