SM411 was being moved at walking speed and that happened??

CG was really close over the wheels.

Thanks for sharing video!

TE384 nose over,

My understanding is that the fast taxiing Spitfires were piloted by the assembled aircrew.

TE384 AI-Q (AI-L on starboard side) together with TE 356 AI-P were scheduled and liveried for the fast taxi in midfield, right to left, with North Weald under attack. This would be circa late May 1968.

Background was pyrotechnics over the North Weald Hangers and the foreground was ‘Skipper’, Robert Shaw, climbing on board and moving off in SM411 AI-A

In one take TE384 came to grief and was replaced by TB382 AI-Q.

I believe TE384 remained on its nose for some period, possibly several days, as it was seen as good scene dressing.

Thanks again Mark12, now it makes me ask how did TE384 get tipped on it’s nose and who was at the controls.

…and was there much damage to it

TE384 – Smashed four blade propeller.

SM411 – None that is apparent. It was fitted with a three blade metal DH prop before and after this incident. It would appear that he was being towed by manpower with the engine stopped. You will see ropes attached to the undercarriage with Robert Shaw still in the cockpit and the tow team walking back still holding the rope. He just snatched the brake lever and over she went and claimed he pulled the same pressure as he had been instructed in a previous shot in a different Spitfire.

Watching that has made me curious as to what was the identity of the Spitfire that Robert Shaw nosed over and was there much damage to it? Thanks

The Shaw flying circus starts about 6:30 with a fast taxi-turn Hurricane, that gear leg must be made of strong stuff. Shaw’s reaction as he walks away is a picture: ‘It came off in me ‘and!’ Complete with grin. Two t***s up Spitfires in one frame – how unladylike!

Have seen this before, but nice to see this footage again. Thanks for posting!

I think they should have got Robert Shaw to clean up his own mess, and “given him a bl**dy shovel!”
