I personally never was interested in the vulcan! Lightnings are alright but i prefer props so its the P38 lightning for me! They look better and sound a hell of a lot better in MY opinion!

Oh you’re so right: those Vulcans on rapid reaction alert were soooo tedious and I just couldn’t get excited by the sight of a Lightning standing on its tail and going straight up.

Well i can safely say i wouldnt be able to tell you what the hell it was! Anything after 1945 i start to lose interest

I plainly recognise it as a four engine, swept wing Spitfire – to do justice to the thread title it can be nothing else!

Remember that some of the publicity photos may be taken while POTUS was not on board. I highly doubt 8 escort fighters would be that close- and that photo looks shopped perhaps?

The most infamous photo-op had the VC-25 low over new York city being chased by a F-16, much to the panic to some on the ground- whoever approved that photo-shoot was not thinking clearly.

I know the E-6 fleet (some of the last 707-320s built) had such an antenna arrangement for LF communications with ballistic missile submarines.

What’s the logo on the tail? It looks like a circle of stars.
Also, I’ve never seen the real AF1 with escorts that close.
The USAF has pretty strict rules on formation flying and I doubt if they’d be flying that close. In short, the danger of a midair is greater than some unknown or unsubstantiated threat.

I read somewhere that Airforce 1 has an aerial in the back that it can pay-out a bit like fishing line.
It’s 3 miles long and can transmit on ultra low frequencies, encrypted and in very small bursts.
So an hour of comms can be burst transmitted in a few seconds.
Not sure if that’s true though?
