Scrutinizing an iconic photo of 3 Comet 1s I noticed the 2 projections fitted to the port tailplane and 1 to the rudder on G-ALVG. Having just bought Graham Simons Comet book I see these are real not just blemishes on the photo …so what was their function?

They are external mass balances, I think fitted only to that aircraft, to cure flutter of the elevators and rudder on an experimental basis. Redsign of the surfaces provided a proper cure which didn’t need them (or their drag).
