Gust-locks on the B-17 in RAF use and/or service

Hello All,
Can anyone tell me if the gust-lock system on the B-17s loaned to, and/or flown by, the RAF had internal/integrated gust-locks, or the external pin-and-flag variety?

The prototype Model 299 crashed at Wright field for this reason.

I think they were integrated. Didn’t any early model crash due to its control surfaces being imobilised?
