Am I right in understanding the conversion hasn’t yet taken place?

Fearn control tower was subject of an episode of ‘Restoration Man’ and was successfully converted. I believe they painted the exterior black.

The b/w photograph is Findo Gask airfield in around 1978. The derelict control tower was situated near the farm buildings. The colour photograph taken in 2013 shows the houses built on the farm. The farm buildings were removed for the up market housing development. In WW2 the airfield was very boggy and 309 squadron that had Lysanders and other aircraft found that their Mustangs had difficulties so the squadron moved to RAF Kirknewton. The Strathallan Museum Lysander was painted in appropriate colours.

The extension is often done that way as a means of complying with planning conservation rules . They usually want a clear demarkation between old and new structure.

Very interesting, and very close to home. I had a friend who lived in Findo Gask, or at least the housing estate ‘Clathymore’ that appears to have grown out of nowhere. It was quite an odd and isolated part of the world. I don’t recall seeing the tower when I was there, but I wasn’t looking for it at the time.

I’m not sure why anything needs to be added to the tower. Why not simply restore it and paint it white? I’m not sure if this is a Scottish phenomenon or a British one, but it isn’t the first time I’ve seen an interesting building extended with an unsympathetic grey metal/glass box tacked on like this.
