Convair CV-880 restoration?

Once upon a time, very early in this century, there was a project to restore an 880 to fly which obviously has not happened. I believe the aircraft involved might have been ex TWA, N8171TW. Has anyone any knowledge of the fate of this restoration or whether the aircraft still exists?

Yup, Swissair had two 880’s on lease pending delivery of the 990’s. Co-incidence of course, but that photo above reminds me of a grown up Hustler aircraft, but then they were both built by the same manufacturer!

I wasn´t aware that Swiss was also flying the 880. I thought they were only flying the Coronado.

I remember as a young boy, seeing Spantax 990’s at “Ringway” & and also if I remember correctly there was an airline called Modern Air that flew 880’s, and Sabrejet is correct along with the VC-10 they were the fastest subsonic airliners.
And not forgetting Swissair.

I seem to recall having seen the CV880 and CV990 type certificates, parts and a couple of aircraft for sale with Courtesy Aircraft not too long ago.

Doing some research, N880JT was impounded at Gatwick, I’d forgotten about that! The other exec I recall was N4339D which was overflying on its way to Europe. I think it was owned by General Dynamics at the time.

Saw a couple of exec 880s in the UK, N880JT was one. Spantax 990s into Gatwick and elsewhere, Swissair into Heathrow. Think I flew on one from Zurich in ’72.

Did any 880’s visit the UK? certainly the 990’s did on charters. Great video Wyvernfan.

Haven’t heard of this one but wish them luck! Would love to see this come to fruition, I sure miss a smokey jet. On the same note wasn’t there also a project to restore a Spantax 990 to static condition ?
