Does anyone know if there are any survivors of this Unit, or if any photographic records survive of its activities? I do know that it did have an annual reunion, but that was forty-odd years ago, so I doubt very much that it is still ongoing. Nonetheless any help or advice offered will, as always, be appreciated. Thanks, Andrew

I live in hope that one day a scrap-book of annotated photos will appear. Alas, I don’t think it will. The National Archives hold AIR 29/1015, but it skims over their achievements, concentrating on officers visits, sports results etc. They were supremely busy: this is their total (chosen at random) for Jun 1941.
Aircraft reduced to produce at unit: Nil
Crash inspections carried out during month: 194
Aircraft reparable on site: 101
Aircraft fit for scrap: 29
Aircraft reparable in factories: 77
Enemy aircraft salved: 4
Total number of aircraft reported for action during month: 211
If only their map references alone were kept! A big enough task to defeat the total resources of today’s RAF, don’t you think?

This unit is mentioned (a few pages) in the RAF Winthorpe book that was published by Newark Air Museum 20 months ago http://www.newarkairmuseum.org/RAF_Winthorpe_Book
Following the death of author Bill Taylor, and since the book was published additional material has been added to the NAM Archive, courtesy of his widow.
