The captioning in the article is so poor and ill-informed that it’s almost hilarious

How about the Express headline “Carol Vorderman flaunts figure in tight zip-up boiler suit to collect aviation award“?
“zip-up boiler suit”?
“She appeared delighted as she posed alongside various air crafts and met the young air cadets“
“air crafts”?

This comes up a lot, but rather than just ranting against the media, let’s take a look at the phrase.
The editors who write the captions (also called cutlines) must think “fighter jet” is correct or they wouldn’t use it.
The “jet” suffix was added in the late 40s or early 50s when jets were new and has somehow remained in use….despite there hasn’t Ben a non-jet fighter built for more than 60 years.
There are many archaic words/phrases (when was a “steamroller” actually powered by steam?) or proper names that are misused to refer to a general type (like Jeep which has been a trademark since the immediate post-war) in use.
Nothing to get too upset about.
After all, few are entirely blameless…even some of the experts here who should know better.
To me, the general media carelessly using a phrase that has come into wide use is not as big an error as getting exact type designations wrong.
My pet peeve is leaving out the – in American military designations.
It’s P-40, not P40…the same way it’s not Spitfire Mk5 or Vulcan B2.

“Found under the ocean”? Is that in the silt below the sea bed?
By: jeepman - 22nd August 2017 at 14:56
Why – because those were not the captions that originally appeared in the article…….
they have been corrected since i posted the original comment

Why? It shows a Spitfire, the Hunter is just used and it says so to show the history of the site and that it continued post war… if you want ridiculous captions look no further than the BBC’s reporting of the finding of the sunken USS Indianapolis with the headline of
“WW2 warship USS Indianapolis found under the ocean”
It does not inspire confidence, one wonders where else you would find it, on the moon, half way up Everest, down the back of the sofa?….
The Independant was no better with
USS Indianapolis: Lost WWII warship found at bottom of ocean 72 years later

“A Spitfire pilot poses next to his fighter jet used to ensure the skies over the North of England were kept safe”
“Pilots fix a decoration to the nose of a Spitfire before its take off from Acklington” HURRICANE !
