Just in: the lovely Dutch Catalina was damaged this afternoon at Lelystad when the nose gear refused to extend. Emergency landing was carried out very well, but damage to the nose underside will probably mean it will be put of action for a while. No injuries reported.

The Catalina was on static display at an event at the Aviodrome today. It was towed there on its own gear, I couldn’t see any damage while taxiing past. That doesn’t mean it isn’t there of course, but it was good to see it on its own three wheels.

Cat’s are built pretty strong. So I dare say that some sheet metal repairs will be done pretty quickly and she will be back up and running in next to no time.

PLane Sailing’s Cat was sunk by a failure (fatigue in a torque tube?) that meant the nose door opened under the force of the water, and the rest is, sadly, history. So yes, as others have said, the last thing you want to do is land on water with it open.

Was the n/w neither up nor down..?Could it have splashed down,beached,fixed,refloat,return..?
They knew that the gear was up but the doors were unlocked. As has been mentioned you run the risk of collapsing some bulkheads in the nose gear bay if you land on water like that. IIRC that’s what sank Plane Sailing’s first Cat.

IMHO should have held it that nose high because one the tail lose control effectiveness, BUMP!
Effective landing, damage looks minimal, all good. 🙂
PS I think something wrong with #1 engine, kept going when #2 already stopped.
Not quite as spectacular as this: 😉

Looked like quite a heavy bump onto its nose. Shame really but let’s hope it’s a relatively easy repair!

That’s a shame, but the most important thing is, nobody was hurt.

It was a wet landing, good skills nicely done
Bloody foam was not needed will do more damage than the landing

Landing gear problems.. The last you want to do is a water landing. Not the first to be sunk by the gear doors being ripped off and causing all kinds of damage.

now.
Touchdown at about 0.30 , nose begins to drop from about 0.52 .
Nicely done considering the circumstances! :eagerness: :applause:
