We visited both these museums recently and while they are two of the smaller UK museums they certainly shouldn’t be overlooked as both offer very rare opportunities. To be able to sit in the flight deck of the Valiant (as well as the cockpits of the Lightning and Buccaneer) at the Highland Aviation Museum and the Antonov An-2 at Morayvia certainly made the trip worthwhile. Some nice displays inside both museums too – Highland focusing on local aviation history and personalities with some great old photos and stories and Morayvia has its engine display and wreck recovery items. Great to see that they have been gifted an ex-Lossiemouth Sea Prince! Currently in Canada but hopefully heading home a.s.a.p
Some photos from Highland Aviation Museum first. Click on them for a larger, more Photobucket-style image!

Thanks for your very positive comments guys, just to make a minor correction, the TSR part is the RE-heat jet pipe module, it is displayed with an Olympus 101 engine actually from a Vulcan Mk.1. The Olympus was used on the TSR so they work as an exhibit.
Please keep looking at our Website and various news items I will put out for updates on other exhibits.

Its great to see developments happening up there! The national museum really needs to grasp the nettle and do more to cover Scottish aviation .
There are glaring gaps which need to be filled .

Thanks, Scotavia. It’s good to see a bit of expansion happening. What with Morayvia’s new acquisitions; the Hawk Major at Montrose; the Loch Doon Spitfire at Dumfries and the DH Dragon based at Cumbernauld, it’s an interesting time for the historic scene in Scotland at present 🙂

I hope they can develop a collecting policy that reflects the rich aviation heritage of the area and enables them to push for a hanger.
Yes indeed, David (though still nice to leave room for an occasional rarity like the An-2). It would be really good to see the exhibits at both Morayvia and Highland under cover.

Very informative volunteer guides with many stories to share.
Unusual exhibits , this is the crew room re created showing where the RAF Lossiemouth SAR stayed on stand by, in the next room is the entire operations and eng room. Makes a change to see fairly recent locations preserved with everything as it was especially as the Sea King is just outside.
David the museum is not on the Kinloss base but instead in a former school which served Southside married quarters. And the collection does have much of local interest with more to come.

That’s great news! Do you know where it’s coming from, Scotavia?

Blimey MM, id never noticed that arrangement with the control yokes before. The Valiants cockpit is a lot more quirky and different to what I had originally imagined it to be like – but I like that!

Also very distinctive was the Control Yoke pitch (fore and aft/elevator) mechanism design, you can see clearly how the yokes slide fore and aft on the square section tubes which are located on the outboard sides of the cockpit –

A few more of the Valiant. It was quite a vertical climb and squeeze into the pilot’s seat!

Over at Morayvia it was more of a clamber up the steep gradient of the An-2!
