Try Fascinating Finishes – I used their BS298 for my original RAF Jeep – – went on well. I believe should be OD until postwar when RAF blue was mandated -TT

If you’re not looking for the RAF Blue-Grey used on MT etc, then Dave is correct (post 7 above) and Traffic Blue is the colour you’re looking for, BS169. It doesn’t appear in the current BS381c lists but that BS number is your starting point. I couldn’t find anybody who could mix it locally so I resorted to getting a close match to an original unfaded sample on one of our aircraft recovery trolleys mixed by a paint supplier.

If you’ve got a good sample of the original a car body shop should be able to scan it and replicate it in an automotive paint which will be more durable if your equipment is kept outside.

Here you go, you can buy RAF Blue Grey

https://www.paintman.co.uk/product-category/coach-enamel/land-rover-stock-colours/landrover-paint-blues/

they even do aircraft colours including USA

https://www.paintman.co.uk/product-category/coach-enamel/military-colours/

We also supply the restoration industry with any known paint code colour.

Paintman paint is made by the finest BRITISH paint manufacturer in the United Kingdom. Paintman Paint is a traditional, ultra high quality, high build synthetic high gloss coach enamel; it gives an extra long wet edge time, thus allowing brushing without brush drag. Paintman Synthetic Coach Enamel Paint is very easy to use and can be applied to your Pride and Joy by spray, roller or brush. If you need specific colours for any other restoration project, whether that be a vehicle, a train, a boat , a plane, machinery, architectural metalwork. Indeed any other application, then please let us have either a small panel, or a colour code if known.

and no I do not work for them.

Fascinating 1958 reference to SCC1A Dark Brown to refinish tin helmets. SCCs were the wartime Standard Camouflage Colours used for everything from uniforms to buildings to vehicles

Hi there,

I have found in Sec 33A of AP1086 dated Jan 1958 reference to ground equipment paint described as Traffic Blue which is BSC169, please see attached picture. The Blue Grey for vehicles is BSC633

Hope that helps

Dave

From the limited info that I’ve managed to find it seems that Yellow roofs etc started to be introduced from the Summer of 1944.

Would they have been blue-grey or would they have been yellow for visibility reasons. The RAF were adding orangey-yellow to roofs and bonnets to vehicles used on the airfield even during the war. I seem to remember there was a yellow Beaverette or Morris LRC towing the control caravan in Night Bombers

What is it you need to paint? Wartime colours can get quite confusing. Pre-war/ Early war the common RAF Grey/Blue was used then Mid war onwards Army green was adopted then back to the normal Grey/Blue after the war until the early 1950’s when the horrible light blue colour became common on GSE.
