The photo of Brian Lane is one I have seen here before in black & white ! One can see the physical strain on his face at the young age of 23! I feel we all owe this man & his fellow pilots so much for our freedoms ! I saw this color version on line tonight on Facebook ! I believe I read here on FLYPAST where he was shot down and went missing ! A salute for his life & service to the nation!

If done properly, it can really make a historic image come to life. Check this for some examples:

The people who fought in WW2 did so for our freedom and security. Suggesting they did so we could have coloured in photos trivialises their endeavour.
I wasn’t debating wether we should have coloured in photos just the fact I don’t believe it adds anything. Much like coloured in old war movies. I prefer the black and white originals.
Colouring of black and white photos is not a new idea. You could purchase a photo with a small paint set which you coloured with your finger. I have one of my father serving on HMS Anson durin WW2.

I agree with “trumper”, Brian Lane & the rest fought so we have the choice.
Never forget that, as do a lot of brave young men & women today!

I think it is nice to see both options but with the proviso that it is marked as colourised .
I also wondered what the effect of the photos were on the families during/after the war seeing their loved ones like this.

I don’t think coloring old photo’s (and old films) adds anything.
In fact the black and white version is more dramatic and says more (to me) about the stress
and anguish of combat in the pilots face.
Black and white adds a vintage authenticity to the picture.
BTW what was the fate of those pilots?

As you say Lest We Forget… and with the greatest respect to them, but do they
know that those cigarettes could kill them in 30-40years…regards,

George Unwin lived to 93 🙂

That is why I always watermark the image that I colourise as colourised….. Stops any confusion if the image them goes out into the wild web.

Presumably, although well done, this is a colourised black and white photo. There is an interesting debate on the pros and cons of colourising photos here
