F/O Douglas John ‘Dusty’ Drake DFC/DFM #617855 #47872 was involved in the 1,000 Bomber Raid and was one of the signatures to a cover issued in 2015

I would like to ask if he bailed out of Anson K8819 of Anson SAN (School of Air Navigation) at Castle Carey, Somerset January 15, 1940. The other crew were F/O Charles Sydney Harold Richardson , P/O David John Bain and Sgt Wilfred Stanley “Kipper/Kip” Herring (Herring was later killed as Sqn Ldr in the General Sikorsky crash

Douglas (Dusty Drake DFM DFC and bar was my father, Doug survived ww2 and died a natural death at the age of 84 in 2003 .He was laid to rest in Woodvale Cemetery Brighton Sussex Doug had 4 sons, 11 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Hope this is of interest to you. Ian Drake

Thanks for the post – The full story of this loss is contained in the AIR 81/1794 Casualty File which details the accident to Anson K8819 of SAN (School of Air Navigation) that crashed at Castle Carey, Somerset January 15, 1940
The aircraft was coded ‘S-2’
