Last Mexican military B.727 retired.

As reported by our sponsor, ‘Flypast’, the last of the three B.727’s in service with the Escuadron Aereo 502. The aircraft was numbered 3507 and based at Santa Lucia.

British Airways leased and operated at least one American Trans Air example. It retained US registration but flew with British Airways titles. I have images of it visiting Jersey.

For many years the 727 was the world’s best selling airliner (1800 + built, a large figure for the time).

It must have been reliable and a profit maker for operators.
With that kind of success why wasn’t it more popular in the UK?
-Plenty of Tridents and BAC 1-11s to use up?

Sabre Airways (later Excel/XL) operated ex Dan-Air G-BNNI for a few years. Also BA leased an ATA 727-100 for a short while – ATA scheme with BA titles!

No. The nearest ‘G’ association would be G-BPNS for Air Malta (which was a Dan Air plane!).

The RNZAF retired its around 2003, replaced by 757s. Unfortunately I don’t remember ever seeing them…except for one hulk sitting outside at RNZAF Woodbourne.

Well considering that there are still B707’s still flying I dare say that there are plenty of 727’s in Asia and Africa that are still going strong.

I spent three four-month field seasons working in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo, the last three years and there’s still a -200 freighter serving Kota Kinabalu International Airport. Even when it was dark and one was propping up the bars you could always spot the 727 departing on account of the almighty racket!

I’m a recently retired 727 captain with 22,000hrs on it. My old airline is still flying 2 200’s and Kalitta still flies several cargo ones out of Detroit. I know of several private 727 still flying.

Still some executive 727s around I think, plus maybe 50 flying commercially. Always liked the 727, particularly the 100. There’s a couple on the UK register modified for oil spill spraying.

Oil Spill Response operate 2 727s (modified) converted for oil dispersant spraying. Both on the G- register after a lot of certification work……..
