Possible Spitfire Tailwheel

Hello,

Yesterday a visitor to our local Flying Club came in with what he presumed was a Spitfire tailwheel. Wheel and tyre are in very good condition, but need for someone to clarify that it is off a Spitfire and not a Chipmunk, or such like. The hub has the following stamped details on it:

DUNLOP
Serial Number R F78296 and what looks like a 1 after that.
DRG. AH2184 Issue 11
C397H in a rectangular cutout in the hub.

Tyre is a PALMER AERO 3-4 RAYON Code PA43.

Sorry, but didnt bring my camera with me today, so will try and take a photo tomorrow and post here.

Can anyone tell me what the wheel and tyre are from?

Many thanks,

Martin

Thanks, you can tell I’m not into Spitfires, just noisy American Trainers! 🙂

Now, the question is, do I keep the wheel or sell it? 🙂

The gentleman said it was from a Mk.8, but didn’t think many of them were built?

1,658 built, the third most common variant.

You are right, it’s my eyesight. There is a mark on the wheel which makes it look like a second 1.

Other marks found are ‘AH0727’ and a triangle of letters with R at the top, B to the left and M to the right. Think will take some photos to illustrate what I am rambling on about!!!

The gentleman said it was from a Mk.8, but didn’t think many of them were built?

Many thanks,

Martin

yep AH2184 is spit, likely it has AH2184/1 as opposed to 11
