Aircraft Compasses And Angular Units

I have a little bit of history with aircraft compasses, but a recent conversation has me puzzled. I’d never heard of compasses marked in ‘mils’ (thousandths of a Radian), but have had a bit of a read on the web and understand that they are/were used on the ground by people shooting things at a distance and where units smaller than a degree can be helpful.

Has anybody ever heard of their use in aircraft?

Would the RAFs AOP Austers use such a compass afterall they were flown by Royal Artillery officers who would understand their significance to the guns they were spotting for.
