A recent second hand shop find, this rather butchered half propeller was part of a table. But what caught my eye was the sheer size of it, its huge. Anyway I’ve taken some photos in the hope someone may be able to help identify the aircraft type that it originated from (the metal ruler is 12″ long).
The only markings I can find is what looks like ’20’ stamped into the wood. And although it was marked as being from WW1 I was thinking more 20’s or 30’s. The shape and ten stud fixing is interesting, and looks to be similar to the Gloster Gauntlet.

Ok thanks for your input John. I’m presuming that the all important information was on the other section, although this name or whatever is written on one end,

The Bristol Jupiter shaft is 3.543″ dia which could be common to other Bristol engines and the Napier Lion shaft is given as 2.953″ (75 mm) on what little info I have. It’s looking to be off a Bristol donkey.

The centre hole of mine would of had a diameter (when complete) of 3.5″, not sure if that helps at all!?

Bristol Jupiter’s such as the VIII had a boss that could take a max 7.75″ thick prop and a bolt PCD of around 9″. I’m sure that someone can come up with the PCD’s for the Peggy and Mercury. The Gladiator prop had a boss built up of wooden fillets and Plywood skirt onto the base prop.

I honestly hadn’t considered the Pegasus before, but was initially drawn towards the Gauntlet and Gladiator with the Bristol Mercury as a possibility, simply because of photos of the two types.

The pitch spacing of the holes appears different on Wyvern fans boss and appears to me to be 10 holes where as the Lion would be 8 holes. Bristol engines used 10 holes and the prop on a Pegasus 1.M3 is approx 11″ wide by 11″ deep.

The stampings are on the curved outer part of the centre boss, the flat sides may show mounting hub indentations from being clamped in use.

Thanks for the reply, Andy. Whereabouts is yours stamped?

Hello Wyvernfan and all,
I have a similar item that is still a table, it is from a Napier Lion XIA and stamped “Aboukir” unsure of exact type.
