Where exactly was RAF Debden?

According to the May Flypast (P104) it was in Buckinghamshire in 1938.

Now I’m damn sure that it’s always been in Essex, and the 1974 boundary changes came nowhere near, never mind putting it in Bucks.

I’m not imagining it, am I? I’ve even looked at the roads on Google Erf to match the aerial photo, and I think they match.

I lived in Saffron Walden and my Mum still does.I do have a video of Charles Churchs spitfire taking off from there probably 20 years or so ago along with an AN 2.

Apologies, Adrian. My irony gene was plainly sub-optimal yesterday.

The Debden Vampire F1 gate guardian was obtained by the Midland Aircraft Preservation Society, which was the progenitor of the Midland Air Museum at Coventry – where it is displayed to this day in good condition inside a hangar.

They had a Venom and a Vampire at about the time of its closure as a RAF Base.

Vampire F.I day fighter and Venom Night Fighter if I remember correctly.

What gate guardian did they used to have there ? I remember seeing something when I was knee high to a grasshopper.
Spitfire or Hurricane ? I also remember seeing what looked like a Lancaster (without wings) parked outside one of the hangars (late 50’s ?)
In later years I went to wing parades and gliding to Debden, as an ATC cadet. Then it was also a dog training school.

…and if you slide Debden to the left of the screen you’ll see one of the places in my location header appearing to the right. I know where it is – been there often enough in fact, Dad delivered the Hussar’s milk when I was a kid, but it was the sheer magnitude of the geographical oopsie that took me back.

Just south and a bit east of Saffron Walden

Buckinghamshire – Essex, that’s a hell of a typo :). But as a relative local I’m happy with the former RAF Debden as always being in Essex, between the market towns of Saffron Walden and Thaxted!
