RAF Faygate

I have recently purchased some land that was either part of RAF Faygate or was adjacent to it and I am keen to find out more about the history of the site. In particular, I think a Bofors anti aircraft gun may have been positioned there. Andy Saunders has written a book on the subject and has been most helpful in updating me on what is currently known. However, I am still yet to find an aerial photo of the site or a detailed plan from the WWII period. I am also keen to speak with anyone who may have memories of the site from that time. Do any of you have any leads please?

Best regards

Interestingly, I spoke to an elderly local resident who said that not all the aircraft arrived by road and rail, some were flown into a short strip that existed there at the time of the war.

That seems unlikely having regard to my understanding of the processing undertaken at Faygate. If something was capable of flying in, then I doubt that it would have interested No. 49 MU.

Pete

Thanks for this. The old photo doesn’t seem to show any aircraft, either this was because there was a period after the war when the site was completely cleared, or perhaps the photo pre-dates the war as I think there were aircraft on site continuously until the 1990’s.

Yes I have thank-you, they don’t hold any information but pointed me to the National Archives where the station diaries are held. Unfortunately, on contacting the National Archives they advised that the diaries were on loan to a Government department. The diaries have been requested and hopefully I’ll get to see them at some point.

Have you tried the RAF Museum? They hold a great many plans from sites to individual buildings and have been a great deal of help to me in the past.
