George Beurling and Spitfire P7913

When the Canadian Ace was stationed at the Central Gunnery School at Sutton Bridge, he engaged in a mock combat with another Spitfire and bailed out of Spitfire II P7913, the remains of which are now with the Fenland and West Norfolk Aviation Museum.

I am researching the airframe and believe that he was actually shot down by the other Spitfire. Can anyone confirm this, or add anything to the Spitfire’s story? Some sources state that it was just an engine fire.

P7913 – 66 Sqn – Exeter, 118 Sqn – Colerne/Warmwell/Ibsley/Perranporth/Predannack, Central Gunnery School – Sutton Bridge. Had an engine fire and aircraft was abandoned at Middle Drove, Norfolk, 08/06/1944.

“Gifts of War” confirms your theory about friendly fire resulting in engine fire.

Is that the same one that he claimed to have buried because it was potentially dangerous to it’s pilot?
