RAFM Hendon 2017

28Jan17
There are a lot of changes going on at Hendon at the moment as the Museum prepares for the Centenary of the Royal Air Force in 2018. The BoB hall is in the process of being emptied, although the Sunderland is staying, with some of the fighters making it into the main buildings with others going to Cosford and the large Luftwaffe aircraft due to appear in the North London daylight in the very near future through holes cut in the side of the old BoB hall. Access from the Milestones of Flight to the main buildings is cut off, the covered walkway tent has finally gone, with the land at the rear being cleared and made ready for what could be storage access space. The FSM Spitfire and Hurricane Gate Guards are down from their perches and are going to Cosford for a bit of TLC before returning to Hendon.

Very interesting, will definitely be going next Saturday. Have never seen any of those outside of the BoB hall, unlike some of our older viewers?
Love the technology on the BF110 trolley!

re:

The most idiotic thing it seems, it that despite being a huge building the former BoB hall will house just 5 aircraft. A V2 will somehow represent the RAF???

My choice would be: Vimy, Bulldog, Hurricane, Meteor, Lightning, Typhoon… that would be logical selection of 5 types across the spectrum.

And whose bright idea is it to grass over the car park? Not someone who is used to British weather.

I want to see rid of those yellow baubles. I had to airbrush them out of my pictures of an otherwise etheral evening on site.

Apart from the Sunderland, all the aircraft were moved out of the former Battle of Britain Hall last Thursday. The Bolingbroke IV, Stuka and He.111 fuselages are stored temporarily in Milestones and the Bf.110 fuselage is snuggled up against the Lancaster rear fuselage. Due to major landscaping works about to take place, there is limited parking at the site. There is a high fenced corridor from the road entrance to the hard car park outside Milestones and the gravel car park outside the Grahame-White hangar. If going by car, get there for doors open for a decent parking space. Photos in the order taken.

Just to add throughout the Summer and Winter Months i regularly visit aviation Museums throughout the UK including the likes of Hawkinge (The Kent Battle of Britain Museum) The Wings museum. De Havilland, Brenzett, Shoreham in Kent, The Thames side Aviation Museum, Fenland,Norfolk and Suffolk aviation Museum,North Weald,Duxford, Carpetbagger,East Kirby, Scampton,Newark,The Sywell aviation Museum,Cosford. and only today a visit to the Tangmere museum.

I visit these at least once per year with more visits to the likes of Hawkinge,The Wings Duxford and lastly Hendon where i would go at least 6 times. but somehow its currently lost its appeal although there are some fantastic exhibits the one that personally appealed to me more than any other was the Battle of Britain Hall.

I know that things move on but for me to take away this hall is tragic to say the least.

Lets just hope like i have said previous there is something put in its place to represent the Battle of Britain. (but it certainly wont be the scale of the Hall)

I’m glad the BoB hall is having a revamp but also sad that we seem to have no large aviation museum exhibit for the battle now.
While the aircraft in the BoB hall were not `accurate` they did give a flavor of what the battle was about.
Is this move to cement Cosford as being a leading aviation museum?
Loosing some of the large airliners and transports has certainly undermined it as an attraction (for me).

I couldn’t agree more hampden98, its certainly in my opinion lost one of its if not its biggest attractions.

Like you say the previous Battle of Britain hall certainly gave a presence of the Battle.

Surely the Raf Museum Hendon will be putting something in its place to tell the air Battle of the Summer of 1940. i guess we will just have to wait and see.
I for one sadly wont be visiting as often as normal.

They have until next year to have it say something.

What makes you think it or any of the other BoB Hall refugees are in their final display positions?

For 40 years the Hurricane was part of a purpose built exhibition. Now she is back in the old building and says nothing.

Landscaping at Hendon starts this week, which means a reduction in the amount of car parking space. If you are planning a visit then keep this in mind

Our staff and contractors have been very busy today, moving the last of the aircraft out of Hangar 1, ready for its transformation as part of our Centenary Plan. Here the Ju-88 is lifted onto a truck ready for its move up to RAFM Cosford.

Thanks for the update, will probably go up next week for a look. Has the museum released full details of what is going where and what will be at Hendon when it is all finished?
