Can anyone ID this rather elegant looking biplane.
A friend gave me this original faded biplane photograph from a house clearance. It had been removed from it’s original frame as this was considered of value whilst the image was going in the trash! It appears to have been partially hand coloured at some point.
This has had me scratching my head all weekend. There are three crew present so perhaps bomber of some sort? It does look vaguely Hawkerish.
The land mass in the background looks semi arid but that could just be my imagination.
The photograph itself is the silvered type so 1920’s or early 1930’s.
If anyone can help I’d appreciate it.

the Wikipedia entry is a good start for general information.
Shocked to find that there is a survivor: “A single example of the Fairey III is preserved in Portugal’s Museu de Marinha (Naval Museum). This is the airplane that finished the first aerial crossing of the South Atlantic. The British Fleet Air Arm Museum has a fuselage.”

From Bruce Robinson’s ‘British Military Aircraft Serials 1912-1963’ (Ian Allan 1964) provides this:
S1373 is one of a batch of 39 Fairey IIIF, S1370-1408 ordered 1929. There are a number of batches of Fairey IIIFs before and after, some noted as all metal, which presumably means that this batch were not.
Was there ever an Air Britain Military S- Serials monograph, for a summary of her service and fate?
A quick ‘Google’ will bring up a great number of Fairey IIIF references, as a general introduction to a type the Wikipedia entry is a good start for general information.
That’s brilliant. Thanks very much viscount.
