Handley Page Archive

I would be very grateful if anyone could point me towards a HandleyPage archive.

I am looking for material on an HP proposal for a Low Altitude Bomber in 1953 – designation HP.99

A collection of manufacturer drawings for selected types, rescued from destruction in the closed-down Handley Page premises, is now at RAFM. A varied collection of other Handley Page material is with the Handley Page Association as already mentioned. It would be sensible to contact the association although bear in mind that those looking after the archive are all volunteers and they might not be able to respond quickly to an information request although I am sure they will do their best.

As far as I am aware the archive is split, part in Hendon and part with another group in North London. I would suggest starting with a phonecall/email to DORIS at RAF Museum in Hendon. However I also believe that they have not as yet catalogued anything.

T courtesyhank you for all your replies, and apologies taking so long in replying.

I am working on a book about stand off weapons, and so I am particularly interested in variants on the Low Altitude Bomber, because this was the first project for which a stand-off weapon (Red Cat) was proposed. There is no one definitive version of the missile, but lots of differing ideas. The origins of Blue Steel can clearly be seen from some of these proposals.

I am hoping I can find the archive so that I can find out more about the intended missile.

‘Handley Page HP.99

The HP.99 low-level bomber has been described in BSP 2, Jet Bombers Since 1950. It was planned that the HP.99 would take off with a light fuel load and then take on 90,000lbs of fuel before heading to its target. This required a new refuelling system capable of transferring 1,000 gallons a minute that would be fitted to Victors or Vulcans. The Mk XIX package was mocked-up using the Valiant’s Mk XVI hose drum unit (it was also proposed to use this unit in production packages to build up the tanker fleet before entry into service of the HP.99) but the prototype had an enlarge Mk XIX hose drum with a new 4in wide hose. Two fuel pumps were used. Much of the testing work was complete when the HP.99 was abandoned’
