New from the FlyPast Digital Archive is our special Fighter Aces of World War Two supplement. The features, previously published in FlyPast, look closely at the combat careers of five fighter pilots who achieved ‘ace’ status during the conflict. We have chosen to focus on five of the less well known names, each of which registered notable achievements through their flying prowess and courage. We have also aimed to single out notable airmen from around the world, including both Allies and Axis forces.

Different nations had their own definition of how many victories were needed to achieve ‘ace’ status – the Soviets, for example, used the term to donate ten victories. For Fighter Aces of World War Two, the mark of becoming an ace is regarded as five air-to-air ‘kills’. This reflects the most widely accepted definition of the phrase.

Each of our five features includes an illustration by esteemed aviation artist Tim O’Brien, depicting each pilot’s coveted fifth victory. The airmen profiled are:
