I seem to recall that some big Uk museum had a sea recovery of an even rarer aircraft recently and have a huge challenge to make an exhibit from the assorted bits which resembles an airframe. If they struggle to achieve the desired result can you see why the p38 is being left alone? Our good fortune in the Uk is that we have several quality projects already in progress which will result in superb flying examples of aviation history and they will join a varied population of aircraft which moves around enabling many to share the sights and sounds.

And
5) the important point about actual ownership of the the wreck. Covered under the previous threads.

To concur with Tangmere1940 and Cebro’s posts (No’s 12 & 4), combine the two and the reality is:
1. Relatively straightforward recovery, but…
2. A place to display it, and…
3. A place to carry out the lengthy conservation but, to override all the above…
4. The considerable cost of the whole operation to…
hopefully end up with a reasonably complete but stabilised and presentable exhibit. No-one can argue that the wreck has historical merit, it’s just down to that versus the huge cost and effort to save it.
Whilst a case can also be made to recover parts, that really is the cheapskate option and ignores the historical aspect completely – if it’s worth recovering then recover it all, not just a few trophies.
Anyway, as stated,, this subject has been very nearly done to death already. On the positive side; it is good that people do care and the future of the aircraft is still being discussed. It just needs that fat wallet/deep pocketed person or organisation to come along and bankroll it. It would be great if it happened.
Anon.

Displaying ‘as is’ in an open, indoor tank would be a spectacular thing to see.
One thing is for certain, if it stays where it is it will be destroyed by a combination of the sea and scavengers.

Yup. We did the ‘Made of Corrosion’ pretty comprehensively a while back.

All of the discussion about recovery, and especially by the tub-thumping ‘recover it’ lobby, overlooks the over-riding issue to which some of the above posts allude.
Recovery would be the (relatively) simple bit – albeit costly.
The real challenge would be its on-going conservation and where to display it.
Really, it isn’t that simple. Which is largely why it is still there.

I do also hate that name along with some other aeroplanes that seem to of picked them up out of knowhere
PA474 per chance?

of course remove it, or one day it will not be there to recover, make a great diorama after years of conservation

So effectively leave it in the sand and it wont survive or come up with a rational plan that would remove it from the sand and give it a chance !

Until you remove it from the sands

Looks in better nick than the RAF Museum Dornier?.

It could easily be a Legends but in the form of a box of DAZ i suspect.

Thankfully so far no one has referred to it by that stupid name it was given.
It looks better in that angle, but Ii imagine it is like a lace curtain close up and it’s likelihood to be at Legends is very slim

Someone with a sensible plan for preservation and display and not to mention deep pockets should do something about it. Leaving it there will only cause more damage.

sands covered it back up thank goodness

Indeed, no-one tell Tighar!
