Australia's latest flying Mustang – airborne today

Australia’s latest CAC Mustang has flown today in Victoria. Peter Gill’s CA-23 Mustang A68-199 has today flown for the first time in nearly 28years. Here it is taking off at Tyabb, Victoria. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10154893551516155&set=gm.338907946493050&type=3&hc_ref=PAGES_TIMELINE

Wonderful news, bravo to all involved! What a thrill for the owner and restoration team(?).

Out of curiosity I looked up the CA-23 and it seems a very different beast! A planned supersonic twinjet?

Yes, a project that never got beyond a mockup stage though. Some plans and GA drawings, along with pics and reports still remain within the archives, now held by the Australian National Aviation Museum. The Sabre ended up taking precedence over the CA23, and there were many criticisms of the design from the British Ministry of Supply when the data was sent to them for assessment, yet EE took a number of design elements and popped them into the Lightning….

Ah a Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation CA.18 Mk23 Mustang is what it is lads, also as was stated its landing in the photo, seems the original poster is poorly researched!

To be absolutely pedantic if it was a Mk.23 it should read CAC CA-18 Mustang Mk.23 however it is a photo recon birds and so should be CAC CA-18 Mustang Mk.22. Not that I have an abiding bias towards Mustangs…..

To be absolutely pedantic it should be CAC CA-18 Mustang Mk.23 but whatever it is a fantastic effort to have it back in the air again. Not that I may be biased in any way…..
