Hawker Seahawk canopy required

Hello,

The Cornwall Aircraft Heritage Centre (CAHC) down at Newquay Airport are busily restoring their Hawker Seahawk FGA.6 WV798. Work is going very well and it is hoped to have the airframe finished in md 2017.

The only major stumbling block for the project is the lack of a suitable canopy as the one presently positioned on top is from a Hunter.

I have been asked to assist and therefore does anyone know of a canopy that could be used to make a plug from which a mold can be produced?

Gateguards down at Newquay have very kindly offered to produce a new canopy as long as an original can be found. It doesn’t have to be in pristine condition, a cracked one would suffice, just as long as the neccessary plug can duly be made.

Hoping that someone out there will be able to help CAHC, I look forward to your suggestions.

Best wishes,

Martin Pengelly

Just to let you know that we have sourced a canopy although cracked for the Seahawk and soon this will be on it’s way down to Cornwall.

All we need to do now is to find a photo of it in Royal Navy service. Got plenty of it when with Airworks, but none in frontline colours!

And Gatwick sounds good. Will PM you Dave.

Best wishes and thanks to all,

Martin

Good evening Martin,

We at Gatwick Aviation Museum would like to help out if possible. Our Sea Hawk has a complete but very opaque canopy that we have been trying to source a replacement for, perhaps you could use ours as a template and we could as Gate guards to make two of them up helping us both out. Let me know if you would like to talk about this and I can put you in touch with our museum manager.

Regards
Dave

As far as I can make out, XE340 has returned to Yeovilton from the museum at Montrose and is stored outdoors with canopy intact? It appears to be a parts mule for the display aircraft, so they might be happy to loan the canopy?

XE340 was returned to FAAM from Montrose and the RNHF did express an interest in looking at it as a spares source but this came to nothing as the flyer was grounded and placed in long term storage at Shawbury, so it might be worth contacting the Curator of Aircraft at FAAM to see if a loan could be arranged.
