Book about History of Newark Air Museum

The following news item has just been released by NAM:

A new book entitled “Preservation Pioneers – Newark Air Museum 1963 – 2015” has just been published.

It is the story of Newark Air Museum from its first aircraft through to the end of 2015; it has been researched by museum member Colin Savill, and has been published by the museum.

The book covers the history on a year by year basis and it includes a couple of special chapters to cover a notable events. It also features an Appendix entitled “Ones that got away” to record airframes that have been at Newark Air Museum and moved on; plus some notable ‘near-misses’ on the acquisition side.

Copies are now available from the NAM Shop and there will be a book signing session / meet the author on Saturday 10th December 2016 further details about the book can be found in here!

Now there’s a thought! 😉

That said, IIRC the last set of signage alongside the Wallace at Hendon didn’t even acknowledge where it came from originally! 🙁

The Wallace fuselage is noted as going into storage in the article on the changes at the RAF museum in last aeroplane mag, perhaps you can ask for it to come back to Newark?

Yak 11 Fan – it’s good to hear that you enjoyed your visit; I’ll tell the shop manager that she ought to get the books to stand out a bit more!

Rocketeer – Cockpit-Fest does feature and I reckon that some of your panels displayed alongside a Pucara cockpit by the Dambusters Hut might be pictured on page 99! 🙂

I must have looked right at them but without actually seeing them… I had a very enjoyable visit, I will definitely be back next time I am up that way.

Robert Whitton – yes NF is the person pictured on the cover (middle one of the three black & white photos).

Yak 11 Fan – I hope that you had a good visit, the books were to the right of the till, next to the RAF Winthorpe books; NAM hasn’t had chance to put up any publicity materials for the book around the site yet. My understanding is that the mail order rates still have to be calculated! 😉

Shame I didn’t spot the book when I visited the museum earlier today, definitely a book to add to the collection.

Here’s a run-down of their ‘status’:

K6038 Westland Wallace (remains) – now displayed @ RAFM Hendon
T9738 Miles Magister – I believe flying out of Breighton
VR249 Percival Prentice – displayed in NAM Hangar 1
VH-UTH GA Monospar – under rebuild in NAM Hangar 1
G-AEOF Mignet Pou de Ciel – to Avidrome, discussed on here recently
G-AMUJ Auster Aiglet Trainer (remains) – not certain of fate
[?] NA Harvard (cockpit section) – KF532 now at Sywell Aviation Museum
[?] Thruxton Jackaroo – I understand this was used as the basis to build Tiger Moth G-MAZY, now displayed in NAM Hangar 1
[?] Airspeed Horsa (parts) – exchanged for Sioux with Museum of Army Flying
‘A4580’ Half scale SE.5a replica (built by member John Baker) – discussed about these parts in the last 5 weeks or so
[-] Lee Richards Annular biplane replica [as well as, enigmatically, ‘plus a quarter scale aircraft’] – BAPC 20 displayed in NAM Hangar 1

As mentioned in the opening post the book contains: “an Appendix entitled “Ones that got away” to record airframes that have been at Newark Air Museum and moved on …”

Out of curiousity, I took a look at the early editions of W&R. Newark gets no mention in the second (1963) edition. In the third (1966) edition, the following are listed:

K6038 Westland Wallace (remains)
T9738 Miles Magister
VR249 Percival Prentice
VH-UTH GA Monospar
G-AEOF Mignet Pou de Ciel
G-AMUJ Auster Aiglet Trainer (remains)
[?] NA Harvard (cockpit section)
[?] Thruxton Jackaroo
[?] Airspeed Horsa (parts)
‘A4580’ Half scale SE.5a replica (built by member John Baker)
[-] Lee Richards Annular biplane replica [as well as, enigmatically, ‘plus a quarter scale aircraft’]

I’ve had a quick skim through the book and it feels quite humbling to have been part of several significant times in the museum’s development.

Here’s the cover of the book, which might whet a few appetites.
