This is part of an ongoing research project of mine, and something of a mystery to be solved. Please read the attached contemporary memo – my question is, what and where were the Welsh Headquarters of the Royal Air Force? One historian friend I have already spoken with said ‘oh that’s just an error’ and dismissed it. Another suggested that it could be an error for a Group HQ, but I’m not so sure! Any suggestions?

Isn’t their march titled Airmen of Harlech?
Alright I’m going 😀

Likely to be an off airfield location where space was available for documents and less likely to be targets.

Some organisations – including one I’ve worked for – made use of old coal mines for long-term storage of paper documents. Obviously you have to pick the right part of the right mine, but if you do get it right, the atmospheric conditions down below are perfect, vary hardly at all, and documents can be left in safety with very little external effort. I’m not sure when we started using ‘our’ mine, but it would not have been very long after this memo was sent, and may even have been a little before.
Having said that, ‘Welsh Headquarters’ doesn’t sound like a document store in the middle of nowhere. I suppose it could be a misinterpretation by someone who didn’t know the true nature of the place.
