The C-54 at Burtonwood Heritage Centre

Photos from May and mid-September 2016 of the former North Weald Douglas C-54 Skymaster front section now at the RAF Burtonwood Heritage Centre – a really interesting account of life at and around the WWII and Berlin Air Lift base. Well worth a visit, usually open from 3pm on days when Gulliver’s World Theme Park is open (check with their web-site). The location is just south of the M62, west of the M6, sort of north of Warrington, UK. As much has been entered on this forum about the breaking up of this aircraft at North Weald, thought a ‘where is it now’ photo-post may well be of interest.

In May the nose had been newly mounted beside the museum building, with nose wheel extended.

A revisit in September found that work to establish the exhibit had continued, with access steps constructed. I was told that Health and Safety should pass the attraction within the next fortnight, when it will be open for public inspection. The cockpit is apparently complete, just as when it last flew. The four crew seats will be used by the public to watch a short film on the Berlin Air Lift, while in the fuselage section are panels on the Berlin Air Lift formerly in the main Heritage Centre building

Note that the nose wheel doors have re-installed during the summer.

The scale Burtonwood Tower is part of a ‘NERF game zone’ attraction of the theme park next door. The public access stairs to the height of the C-54 now constructed.

Under the fuselage are various pieces from North Weald, including the ‘star and bars’ fuselage insignia, engine cowling and cooler intake, and a complete Pratt & Whitney R-2000 from the Skymaster. The Museum also, already have a Wasp engine displayed indoors.
