Sherman Tank Engines into Aircraft (or vice versa) ?

Watching an interesting program on TV about the Sherman and surprised to find out it’s powered by a Radial Engine.
So can these engines be placed into aircraft or are they specific to tanks?
Anyone know why radial engines were used in favour of more conventional diesels?
