I’ve been asked by a friend about squadrons of sparrow Hawks used by the RAF to control wild birds on airfields. He hasn’t found anything online & wondered if anyone knows if there are any books relating?
Thanks in advance

Some useful posts in the PPrune thread, bird control was for 4 years one of my RAF jobs and it does need determination with many hours out on the airfield and surrounds.

I’ve even read Birdstrike reports where the bird remains were identified as the Bird Control Unit’s Hawk!
Did the roundels painted on the wings give it away?

They can also attract unwanted birds, as well as repel them.

Not Sparrowhawks ,other species used by falconers who turned a hobby to advantage. Initially it was RAf airman,in 1973 I met one at RAf Valley. later part of contracts. Biggest advantage was that the staff were keen, downside was birds not being fit to fly on certain days so at least 3 were need to give full cover.
